BADE ACCHE LAGTE HAIN: Niharika dies in a car crash engineered by Sid!
The family is stunned – Ayesha wails, Ram freezes, Mamaji cries…. and what will Priya say? Eva Grover, who plays the wicked mother-in-law in Bade Acche Lagte Hain, has been killed off in a car crash. She quit the show because she did not want to age, she said, and would rather not be a granny just when she is back in great shape and looking younger than ever. She could have been replaced by another actor, but we doubt that whoever was chosen would have been able to match Eva’s advanced degree in evil – the lady’s twist o’ lip and gleam o’ eye was quintessential nasty, and her plotting and scheming more diabolical than we have ever seen. And we liked every bit of it!The tale got very twisted when Sid was revealed as the major baddie after some rather ineffectual woffling as he tried to be villainous in a gently understated way. He perhaps forgot the prime rule of television soap operas of the Ekta Kapoor kind – you gotta be in-your-face loud and melodramatic to get the point across! So as it turns out, apart from his evil designs on Priya’s sister and his siding with his mother against Ram and the rest, he had actually plotted to have his big (and we mean that literally) brother killed in an accident. Unfortunately, there was no accounting for taste or the twist in the tale and Sid told his mum Niharika about his plan. She, finding last minute redemption of sorts, took Ram’s place in the car and was fatally injured as it was hit by a speeding truck. As she dies, swathed in virginal white bandages in hospital, she gasps out her last words – she may have been all evil and negative, she tells a grieving Sid, but she did it all for love, her love for her children. Sigh. We were indeed touched by all that. And look forward to whatever new horrors the makers of the show may bring us in the name of fiction! |
